Description

Shigella sonnei is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the genus Shigella. It is one of the four major species of Shigella that cause Shigellosis, an acute diarrheal disease.

S. sonnei is highly contagious and primarily spreads through the fecal-oral route via contaminated food, water, or contact with infected individuals.

In developing countries, S. sonnei is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. However, it is also prevalent in developed countries, particularly among travelers and individuals living in crowded or unsanitary conditions.

S. sonnei infection primarily causes:

  • Shigellosis: An acute diarrheal disease characterized by fever, abdominal pain, cramping, and frequent stools. In severe cases, it can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and potential complications such as seizures and HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome).
