SGSM2
Description
The SGSM2 (small G protein signaling modulator 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.
SGSM2 is a protein encoded by the SGSM2 gene in humans. Research has linked this gene to fasting glucose levels, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
SGSM2 acts as a GTPase activator for RAB32, RAB33B, and RAB38, influencing their activity. It regulates the movement of melanin-producing enzymes (TYR, TYRP1, and DCT/TYRP2) within melanocytes by deactivating RAB32 and RAB38. This control is achieved through two mechanisms: directly accelerating the GTPase activity of these RAB proteins and indirectly interfering with the RAB9A-HPS4 interaction, which is essential for activating RAB32 and RAB38.
SGSM2 is also known as RUTBC1.
