Sidekick cell adhesion molecule 1 is a protein in humans encoded by the SDK1 gene. This protein is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily and contains six immunoglobulin-like domains and thirteen fibronectin type III domains. These domains are found in both extracellular and intracellular proteins, with tandem repeats known to contain binding sites for DNA, heparin, and the cell surface. The SDK1 gene undergoes alternative splicing, leading to multiple transcript variants.
SDK1 is an adhesion molecule that facilitates the formation of specific synaptic connections within the retina's lamina. It is found in particular types of interneurons and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and promotes synaptic connectivity through homophilic interactions.
