SCAF4

Description

The SCAF4 (SR-related CTD associated factor 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

SCAF4 is a protein that plays a critical role in preventing premature termination of mRNA transcripts during transcription. It acts by binding to the phosphorylated C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II, specifically at serine-2 and serine-5 residues. This interaction allows SCAF4 to associate with nascent RNA upstream of early polyadenylation sites, effectively blocking premature cleavage and polyadenylation. In addition to its role in suppressing early polyadenylation, SCAF4 also acts independently to suppress transcriptional readthrough. This dual function ensures the production of full-length, functional proteins.

SCAF4 is also known as FZS, SFRS15, SRA4.
