S100A7

Description

The S100A7 (S100 calcium binding protein A7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

S100A7, also known as psoriasin, is a protein encoded by the S100A7 gene. It belongs to the S100 family, characterized by two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. While most S100 proteins regulate various cellular processes like cell cycle and differentiation, S100A7 exhibits unique features. It lacks calcium-binding ability in one EF-hand at its N-terminus. Its primary function is as an antimicrobial peptide, particularly against E. coli, by disrupting their cell membranes. This explains why human skin, even in unsanitary environments, is generally resistant to E. coli infections. S100A7 is secreted by skin epithelial cells and is highly homologous to S100A7A (koebnerisin), but with distinct expression, tissue distribution, and function.

S100A7 is also known as PSOR1, S100A7c.
