S100A6

Description

The S100A6 (S100 calcium binding protein A6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

S100A6 is a protein involved in various cellular processes, including cell cycle progression and differentiation. It is a member of the S100 family of proteins and contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. The gene encoding S100A6 is located on chromosome 1q21. This protein might play a role in insulin release, prolactin secretion, and exocytosis. Changes in its expression or chromosomal rearrangements have been linked to melanoma. S100A6 has been shown to interact with S100B and SUGT1. It is a potential diagnostic marker for papillary thyroid carcinoma.

S100A6 acts as a calcium sensor and modulator, influencing cellular calcium signaling. It interacts with other proteins, particularly those containing TPR repeats, indirectly impacting various physiological processes including the rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton and cell movement. S100A6 binds two calcium ions in a cooperative manner.

S100A6 is also known as 2A9, 5B10, CABP, CACY, PRA, S10A6.
