The S100A5 (S100 calcium binding protein A5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
S100A5, also known as S100 calcium-binding protein A5, is a protein encoded by the S100A5 gene in humans. It belongs to the S100 protein family, which contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are found in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cells and play a role in regulating cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. The S100 gene family includes at least 13 members clustered on chromosome 1q21. S100A5 exhibits a significantly higher affinity for Ca2+ compared to other S100 proteins, approximately 20 to 100 times greater under identical conditions. It also binds Zn2+ and Cu2+, with Cu2+ strongly inhibiting Ca2+ binding. S100A5 is expressed in very specific areas of the adult brain.
S100A5 binds calcium, zinc, and copper. Each subunit can simultaneously bind 2 calcium ions or 2 copper ions plus 1 zinc ion. Calcium and copper ions compete for the same binding sites.
