S100A2

Description

The S100A2 (S100 calcium binding protein A2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

S100A2, also known as CaN19 or S100L, is a protein encoded by the S100A2 gene located on chromosome 1q21. It was initially discovered in bovine lung tissue but later identified in human mammary epithelial cells. S100A2 is highly expressed in human lungs, prostate, kidneys, hair follicles, and salivary and mammary glands. Unlike many other S100 proteins, it is primarily found in the nucleus, but also in the cytoplasm with a diffuse distribution. Its cytoplasmic presence is likely influenced by cellular calcium levels. In the extracellular environment, S100A2 exists as a homodimer (both in vivo and in vitro) and in monomeric, polymeric, and multimeric forms. In its multimeric form, it acts as a RAGE receptor ligand. S100A2 plays a role in cytoskeleton organization.

S100A2 is also known as CAN19, S100L.
