RRP8

Description

The RRP8 (ribosomal RNA processing 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

RRP8 is a crucial component of the eNoSC (energy-dependent nucleolar silencing) complex, which plays a role in silencing ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in response to cellular energy levels. The eNoSC complex can sense cellular energy status: when glucose is scarce, the NAD(+)/NADP(+) ratio increases, activating SIRT1, a deacetylase that removes acetyl groups from histone H3. This deacetylation is followed by dimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9me2) by SUV39H1, leading to the formation of silent chromatin in the rDNA locus. Within the eNoSC complex, RRP8 binds to H3K9me2 and likely functions as a methyltransferase, although its specific substrates remain unknown.

RRP8 is also known as KIAA0409, NML.
