RPS20

Description

The RPS20 (ribosomal protein S20) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

The RPS20 gene encodes for 40S ribosomal protein S20, a protein that is a component of the small 40S ribosomal subunit, one of the two subunits that make up ribosomes. Ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis and consist of four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. RPS20 belongs to the S10P family of ribosomal proteins and is located in the cytoplasm. This gene is co-transcribed with the small nucleolar RNA gene U54, found within its second intron. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.

RPS20 is part of the small ribosomal subunit, which is a crucial component of the ribosome, a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for protein synthesis within the cell.

RPS20 is also known as S20, uS10.
