RPS11

Description

The RPS11 (ribosomal protein S11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

RPS11 (40S ribosomal protein S11) is a protein encoded by the RPS11 gene in humans. Ribosomes, the cellular organelles responsible for protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are made up of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. RPS11 is a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S17P family of ribosomal proteins. It resides in the cytoplasm. Its bacterial counterpart, ribosomal protein S17, is thought to play a role in recognizing termination codons during protein synthesis. The RPS11 gene is co-transcribed with a small nucleolar RNA gene located within its third intron. Like other genes encoding ribosomal proteins, RPS11 has multiple processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the genome.

RPS11 is also known as S11, uS17.
