RGS5
Description
The RGS5 (regulator of G protein signaling 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
RGS5, or Regulator of G-protein signaling 5, is a protein encoded by the RGS5 gene in humans. It belongs to a family of signal transduction molecules, the RGS proteins, which share structural similarities with SST2 in yeast and EGL-10 in the nematode worm. These proteins play a crucial role in regulating heterotrimeric G proteins by acting as GTPase activators. RGS5 has been found to interact with the proteins GNAO1, GNAI2, and GNAI3.
RGS5 inhibits signal transduction by accelerating the GTPase activity of G protein alpha subunits, pushing them into their inactive, GDP-bound state. It selectively binds to G(i)-alpha and G(o)-alpha subunits, but not to G(s)-alpha.
