RGS20

Description

The RGS20 (regulator of G protein signaling 20) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

RGS20 is a protein encoded by the RGS20 gene in humans. It belongs to the Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) protein family, which acts as regulatory and structural components of G protein-coupled receptor complexes. RGS proteins are GTPase-activating proteins for Gi and Gq class G-alpha proteins.

RGS20 inhibits signal transduction by increasing the GTPase activity of G protein alpha subunits, driving them into their inactive GDP-bound form. It selectively binds to G(z)-alpha and G(alpha)-i2 subunits, accelerating their GTPase activity and regulating their signaling activities. The activity of G(z)-alpha is inhibited by phosphorylation and palmitoylation of the G-protein. RGS20 negatively regulates mu-opioid receptor-mediated activation of the G-proteins.

RGS20 is also known as RGSZ1, ZGAP1, g(z)GAP, gz-GAP.
