PTX3

Description

The PTX3 (pentraxin 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

PTX3 is a member of the pentraxin family, known for their cyclic multimeric structure. It is produced and released by various cell types in response to inflammation. PTX3 binds to C1q, TNFAIP6, and certain microorganisms. It activates the complement system and aids macrophages and dendritic cells in recognizing pathogens. Human and mouse PTX3 are highly similar, sharing a significant portion of their amino acid sequence. The protein is composed of two domains: a pentraxin domain at the carboxy-terminal end and an amino-terminal domain with no known homology to other proteins. The pentraxin domain contains the characteristic pentraxin signature sequence and two conserved cysteine residues.

PTX3 is also known as TNFAIP5, TSG-14.
