PRSS2

Description

The PRSS2 (serine protease 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The PRSS2 gene encodes a protein called trypsinogen, which is a member of the trypsin family of serine proteases. This enzyme is produced in the pancreas and activated in the small intestine where it breaks down proteins into smaller peptides. It specifically targets peptide bonds involving lysine or arginine. Several other trypsinogen genes are located near the PRSS2 gene on chromosome 7.

In the ileum, it may play a role in processing defensins, particularly DEFA5.

PRSS2 is also known as TRY2, TRY8, TRYP2.
