PRPH

Description

The PRPH (peripherin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

PRPH, also known as Peripherin, is a class-III neuronal intermediate filament protein. It can form an independent structural network or cooperate with other neuronal intermediate filament proteins like NEFL, NEFH, NEFM, and INA to form a filamentous network. The assembly of these filaments might be regulated by RAB7A. PRPH is involved in the development of unmyelinated sensory neurons, axon elongation, and axon regeneration after injury. It also inhibits neurite extension in type II spiral ganglion neurons in the cochlea.

PRPH is also known as NEF4, PRPH1.
