PRKAR2A

Description

The PRKAR2A (protein kinase cAMP-dependent type II regulatory subunit alpha) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

PRKAR2A, encoding the cAMP-dependent protein kinase type II-alpha regulatory subunit, is crucial for cellular processes involving cAMP signaling. cAMP activates protein kinase A (PKA), a tetrameric enzyme composed of regulatory and catalytic subunits. PRKAR2A, a regulatory subunit, forms the inactive holoenzyme with catalytic subunits. Upon cAMP binding, the holoenzyme dissociates, releasing active catalytic subunits. PRKAR2A interacts with anchoring proteins, determining PKA's subcellular localization. This subunit is involved in regulating protein transport between endosomes, Golgi apparatus, and the endoplasmic reticulum.

PRKAR2A is a regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinases, playing a crucial role in cAMP signaling within cells. Type II regulatory chains, including PRKAR2A, facilitate membrane association by binding to anchoring proteins such as MAP2 kinase.

PRKAR2A is also known as PKR2, PRKAR2.
