PRG2

Description

The PRG2 (proteoglycan 2, pro eosinophil major basic protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

PRG2 (also known as major basic protein or MBP) is a protein encoded by the PRG2 gene. It is the primary component of eosinophil granules and is found in high levels in the placenta and pregnancy serum. PRG2 is involved in antiparasitic defense mechanisms as a cytotoxin and helminthotoxin, and also participates in immune hypersensitivity reactions. It is implicated in epithelial cell damage, exfoliation, and bronchospasm in allergic diseases. PRG2, while similar in structure to lectins (sugar-binding proteins) and possessing a fold resembling C-type lectins, does not bind calcium or other carbohydrates recognized by this family.

PRG2 is also known as BMPG, MBP, MBP1, proMBP.
