PRDM2

Description

The PRDM2 (PR/SET domain 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

PRDM2 (PR domain zinc finger protein 2) is a tumor suppressor gene that encodes a zinc finger protein involved in transcriptional regulation. This protein is part of a nuclear histone/protein methyltransferase family and can bind to various proteins including the retinoblastoma protein, estrogen receptor, and the TPA-responsive element (MTE) of the heme-oxygenase-1 gene. PRDM2 may play a role in neuronal differentiation and retinoblastoma development, and may act as a transcriptional activator of the heme-oxygenase-1 gene. It has also been implicated as a specific effector of estrogen action. Three different isoforms of the protein have been identified.

PRDM2 is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent histone methyltransferase that specifically modifies histone H3 by adding a methyl group to lysine 9. It may also act as a DNA-binding transcription factor. PRDM2 binds to the macrophage-specific TPA-responsive element (MTE) of the HMOX1 (heme oxygenase 1) gene and potentially functions as a transcriptional activator of this gene.

PRDM2 is also known as HUMHOXY1, KMT8, KMT8A, MTB-ZF, RIZ, RIZ1, RIZ2.
