PPIP5K1

Description

The PPIP5K1 (diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate kinase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

PPIP5K1 is a bifunctional inositol kinase that works with the IP6K kinases IP6K1, IP6K2, and IP6K3 to produce diphosphate group-containing inositol pyrophosphates such as diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate (PP-InsP5) and bis-diphosphoinositol tetrakisphosphate ((PP)2-InsP4). These pyrophosphates, also known as InsP7 and InsP8, play a role in various cellular processes including apoptosis, vesicle trafficking, cytoskeletal dynamics, exocytosis, insulin signaling, and neutrophil activation. PPIP5K1 can phosphorylate inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6) at position 1 to create PP-InsP5, which is then further phosphorylated by IP6Ks to form (PP)2-InsP4. Alternatively, PPIP5K1 can phosphorylate PP-InsP5 (produced by IP6Ks from InsP6) at position 1 to form (PP)2-InsP4. The activity of PPIP5K1 is increased when cells encounter hyperosmotic stress.

PPIP5K1 is also known as HISPPD2A, IP6K, IPS1, VIP1, hsVIP1.
