PON2

Description

The PON2 (paraoxonase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

PON2 is a human gene encoding a member of the paraoxonase gene family. The protein is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues, membrane-bound, and functions as a cellular antioxidant, protecting against oxidative stress. It also hydrolyzes acylhomoserine lactones, bacterial quorum-sensing mediators, suggesting a role in defense against pathogenic bacteria. Mutations in PON2 may be linked to vascular disease and diabetes-related phenotypes. Multiple isoforms are produced through alternative splicing.
