Description

The POLR2L (RNA polymerase II, I and III subunit L) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The POLR2L gene encodes a subunit of RNA polymerase II, the polymerase responsible for synthesizing messenger RNA in eukaryotes. The protein contains four conserved cysteines characteristic of an atypical zinc-binding domain. It is shared by the other two DNA-directed RNA polymerases.

DNA-dependent RNA polymerase catalyzes the transcription of DNA into RNA using the four ribonucleoside triphosphates as substrates. It is a common component of RNA polymerases I, II, and III, which synthesize ribosomal RNA precursors, mRNA precursors, many functional non-coding RNAs, and small RNAs such as 5S rRNA and tRNAs, respectively.

POLR2L is also known as RBP10, RPABC5, RPB10, RPB10beta, RPB7.6, hRPB7.6.
