PIGX

Description

The PIGX (phosphatidylinositol glycan anchor biosynthesis class X) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

PIGX is an essential component of glycosylphosphatidylinositol-mannosyltransferase 1 (GPI-MT1), an enzyme responsible for the initial step in the biosynthesis of GPI anchors. GPI anchors are glycolipid structures that attach proteins to the outer surface of cell membranes. PIGX facilitates the transfer of the first mannose residue from a donor molecule to the GPI anchor precursor during this initial step. This process is crucial for the proper assembly and function of GPI-anchored proteins, which play a wide range of roles in cell signaling, adhesion, and other critical processes.

PIGX is also known as PIG-X.
