Description

The PDE4B (phosphodiesterase 4B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

PDE4B is a human gene that encodes for cAMP-specific 3',5'-cyclic phosphodiesterase 4B, an enzyme belonging to the type IV cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. PDEs regulate cellular cAMP concentrations, which are important second messengers involved in various cellular responses to external stimuli like hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDE4B specifically hydrolyzes cAMP. Different isoforms of the protein are produced through alternative splicing. Altered activity of PDE4B has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. PDE4B is believed to be the PDE4 subtype involved in the antipsychotic effects of PDE4 inhibitors like rolipram. It is also implicated in dopamine-related and stress-related behaviors. Recent findings suggest that PDE4B modulates cognition, with reduced PDE4B activity enhancing memory and long-term plasticity in mouse models, suggesting potential therapeutic applications.

PDE4B hydrolyzes cyclic AMP (cAMP), a key signaling molecule involved in various cellular processes. It is implicated in mediating the effects of therapeutic agents acting on the central nervous system, such as antidepressants, antiasthmatics, and anti-inflammatory drugs.
