PALB2
Description
The PALB2 gene plays a crucial role in DNA repair, specifically in the homologous recombination pathway. This pathway is essential for fixing double-strand breaks in DNA, which can occur due to environmental factors like radiation or during normal cell division. PALB2 acts as a bridge between BRCA2 and the damaged DNA, enabling proper repair and preventing the accumulation of mutations that can lead to cancer. Mutations in PALB2 disrupt this crucial repair mechanism, increasing the risk of developing various cancers, particularly breast and ovarian cancer.

Mutations in PALB2 are associated with a higher risk of developing cancer at a younger age compared to BRCA1 mutations.
