OR8D1

Description

The OR8D1 (olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

Olfactory receptor 8D1 is a protein encoded by the OR8D1 gene in humans. Olfactory receptors detect odorant molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals through G protein-mediated pathways. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms.

This protein is a potential odorant receptor. It may play a role in taste perception.

OR8D1 is also known as JCG9, OR8D3, OST004, PDJ9J14.
