OR8B4
Description
The OR8B4 (olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
The OR8B4 gene in humans codes for a protein called Olfactory receptor 8B4. This protein plays a vital role in our sense of smell by interacting with odorant molecules in the nose. This interaction triggers a neuronal response that we perceive as a smell. Olfactory receptors belong to a large group of proteins called G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and are encoded by single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, which allows them to recognize and transmit odorant signals through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The naming system used for these genes and proteins is distinct from other organisms.
Odorant receptor.
OR8B4 is also known as OR11-315, OR8B4P.
