OR8B12

Description

The OR8B12 (olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 12) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The OR8B12 gene in humans produces a protein called olfactory receptor 8B12. Olfactory receptors, which belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are crucial for our sense of smell. They work by detecting odor molecules in the nose and triggering a neuronal response, ultimately leading to the perception of a smell. These receptors share a distinctive 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and the nomenclature used for these genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms.

This protein acts as an odorant receptor, a type of receptor responsible for detecting and responding to odor molecules.

OR8B12 is also known as OR11-317.
