OPCML

Description

The OPCML (opioid binding protein/cell adhesion molecule like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

OPCML encodes a protein belonging to the IgLON subfamily of immunoglobulin proteins. This protein is found in cell membranes and may play a supporting role in opioid receptor function. It has counterparts in rat and cow, and the rat version binds opioids in the presence of acidic lipids, exhibiting preference for mu ligands. It acts as a GPI-anchored protein. The high conservation of OPCML across species suggests an essential function in mammals. Two different versions of OPCML have been identified, each with a unique structure.

OPCML is also known as IGLON1, OBCAM, OPCM.
