ODF2
ODF2 (Outer Dense Fiber Protein 2)
Description:
ODF2 is a protein found in the outer dense fibers (ODFs) of the sperm's head. These fibers form a protective shell that surrounds the head and assists sperm penetration through the layers of the egg during fertilization.
Associated Diseases:
Defects in ODF2 have been linked to male infertility, primarily due to impaired sperm motility and fertilization capacity. Mutations in the ODF2 gene can lead to:
- Asthenozoospermia (reduced sperm motility)
- Teratozoospermia (abnormal sperm morphology)
- Oligozoospermia (low sperm count)
- Complete azoospermia (absence of sperm cells)
Did you Know ?
Studies have shown that mutations in the ODF2 gene account for approximately 1-5% of cases of male infertility.
