NUCB2

Description

The NUCB2 (nucleobindin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

Nucleobindin-2 is a protein encoded by the NUCB2 gene in humans. It is a calcium-binding EF-hand protein. NUCB2 is the protein precursor of nesfatin-1. In the study of the evolution of nervous systems, NUCB2 and SMIM20 have been found to share deep homology across all lineages that predate creatures with central nervous systems, including bilaterians, cnidarians, ctenophores, sponges, and choanoflagellates.

Nucleobindin-2 is a calcium-binding protein that may play a role in calcium homeostasis. It acts as a non-receptor guanine nucleotide exchange factor, binding to and activating the G-protein alpha subunit GNAI3.

NUCB2 is also known as HEL-S-109, NEFA.
