Description
The NSDHL (NAD(P) dependent steroid dehydrogenase-like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.
The NSDHL gene provides instructions for making an enzyme involved in cholesterol production. Cholesterol is a lipid obtained from animal foods and is also produced by the body. During cholesterol synthesis, the NSDHL enzyme participates in converting lanosterol to cholesterol by removing a methyl group. Although high cholesterol is linked to heart disease, the body requires cholesterol for normal development and function. Before birth, cholesterol is involved in brain, limb, and genital tract development. It is also a component of cell membranes and myelin, and is used in hormone production and digestion.
