NPAS1

Description

The NPAS1 (neuronal PAS domain protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

NPAS1 is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor.

NPAS1 may play a role in regulating pathways associated with schizophrenia and psychotic illness. It may also contribute to late-stage central nervous system development by adjusting EPO expression in response to cellular oxygen levels. NPAS1 can form heterodimers with other proteins, binding to a specific DNA sequence (5'-TACGTG-3') within the hypoxia response element (HRE). This binding leads to the suppression of transcription for its target gene, TH.

NPAS1 is also known as MOP5, PASD5, bHLHe11.
