NOP58

Description

The NOP58 (NOP58 ribonucleoprotein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

Nucleolar protein 58 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NOP58 gene.

NOP58 is essential for the formation of the 60S ribosomal subunit. It is a core component of box C/D small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (snoRNP) particles, which are necessary for the synthesis of box C/D snoRNAs like U3, U8, and U14 snoRNAs. NOP58 is a part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, the initial precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, numerous ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone, and ribosomal proteins interact with the nascent pre-rRNA. Together, they facilitate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements, and cleavage, as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome.

NOP58 is also known as HSPC120, NOP5, NOP5/NOP58.
