NMB

Description

The NMB (neuromedin B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

NMB may stand for: Neuromedin-B

NMB stimulates smooth muscle contraction. It induces sighing by directly acting on the pre-Botzinger complex, a cluster of neurons in the ventrolateral medulla responsible for inspiration during breathing. NMB is involved in sneezing, likely by activating neurons in the brainstem after being released by nasal sensory neurons in response to irritants or allergens. It contributes to acute itch, possibly through activating the NMBR receptor on dorsal root ganglion neurons. NMB increases the expression of NMBR and steroidogenic mediators in Leydig cells, leading to testosterone secretion and Leydig cell proliferation. It plays a role in the innate immune response to influenza A virus infection by increasing interferon alpha expression and reducing IL6 expression. NMB also contributes to the proliferation of osteoclast precursors by regulating the expression of the CSF1 receptor CSF1R.

NMB is also known as -.
