NKX3-1

Description

The NKX3-1 (NK3 homeobox 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

NKX3-1, also known as Homeobox protein Nkx-3.1, is a protein encoded by the NKX3-1 gene located on chromosome 8p in humans. It is a key tumor suppressor gene in the prostate. NKX3-1 is regulated by androgens and is specifically expressed in prostate epithelial cells. It acts as a transcription factor, controlling the expression of other genes. As a negative regulator of epithelial cell growth, it plays a vital role in prostate development and tumor suppression. Loss of NKX3-1 expression is commonly observed in prostate cancers and precancerous lesions. The NKX3-1 gene is located on chromosome 8p21.2 and has four exons. Loss of genetic material on chromosome 8p, including the NKX3-1 gene, is a frequent occurrence in the development of prostate cancer.

NKX3-1 is a transcription factor that binds to a specific DNA sequence (5'-TAAGT[AG]-3') and can repress gene expression. It plays a vital role in the normal development of the prostate gland, controlling the growth of epithelial cells and the formation of ducts. NKX3-1 acts as a tumor suppressor, preventing the development of prostate cancer by inhibiting the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells.

NKX3-1 is also known as BAPX2, NKX3, NKX3.1, NKX3A.
