NKX2-2
Description
The NKX2-2 (NK2 homeobox 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.
NKX2-2 is a gene that encodes a homeobox protein known as Nkx-2.2. This protein contains a homeobox domain and is likely involved in the development of the central nervous system. It is located on chromosome 20, near another related gene, NKX2-4. Interestingly, these genes have duplicated counterparts on chromosome 14, called TITF1 and NKX2-8. Nkx-2.2 is thought to act as a nuclear transcription factor, and its expression is regulated by an antisense RNA called Nkx-2-2as. In the developing spinal cord, Nkx-2.2 plays a role in regulating IRX3, contributing to the proper differentiation of ventral horn neurons.
NKX2-2 is a transcriptional activator that plays a crucial role in the development of insulin-producing beta cells within the endocrine pancreas. It is also implicated in defining diencephalic neuromeric boundaries and regulating the expression of genes involved in axonal guidance. Furthermore, NKX2-2 binds to elements within the NEUROD1 promoter.
