NINJ2

Description

The NINJ2 (ninjurin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

NINJ2, also known as Nerve injury-induced protein 2, is a protein involved in both cell death and nerve regeneration. It acts as a homophilic transmembrane adhesion molecule, promoting axonal growth and nerve regeneration. In contrast to its closely related protein NINJ1, NINJ2 does not mediate plasma membrane rupture (cytolysis) during necroptotic and pyroptotic programmed cell death. Instead, NINJ2 is involved in the inflammatory response by promoting the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) after cell death. This release is triggered by the oligomerization of NINJ2 into ring-shaped structures in the membrane, exposing hydrophobic faces of 2 alpha helices to the membrane and facilitating the release of DAMPs.

NINJ2 is also known as -.
