NGB

Description

The NGB (neuroglobin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

NGB can refer to: Neuroglobin, a protein found in neurons.

Neuroglobin (NGB) is a monomeric globin with a heme-iron atom that binds dioxygen, carbon monoxide, and nitric oxide. It may help transport oxygen to neuronal tissues, but its low quantity and high affinity for oxygen might limit its oxygen-releasing ability. In its deoxygenated state, NGB functions as a nitrite reductase, producing nitric oxide to inhibit cellular respiration during hypoxia. Additionally, it can act as a guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor (GDI), regulating signal transduction pathways to protect neurons from hypoxia and oxidative stress.

NGB is also known as -.
