NFE2

Description

The NFE2 (nuclear factor, erythroid 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

Transcription factor NF-E2 45 kDa subunit is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NFE2 gene. It is involved in megakaryocyte production. NFE2 has been shown to interact with CREB-binding protein.

The NFE2 protein is a crucial component of the NF-E2 complex, playing a vital role in regulating the maturation and differentiation of erythroid and megakaryocytic cells. It binds to the hypersensitive site 2 (HS2) within the beta-globin control region (LCR), recognizing the TCAT/C sequence of the AP-1-like core palindrome found in numerous erythroid and megakaryocytic gene promoters. NFE2 requires the presence of MAFK or other small MAF proteins to bind to the NF-E2 motif. This protein may be involved in all stages of hemoglobin production, encompassing globin and heme synthesis as well as iron acquisition.

NFE2 is also known as NF-E2, p45.
