NEURL2

Description

The NEURL2 (neuralized E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

Neuralized-like protein 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NEURL2 gene. This gene encodes a protein that is involved in the regulation of myofibril organization. This protein is likely the adaptor component of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex in striated muscle, and it regulates the ubiquitin-mediated degradation of beta-catenin during myogenesis.

NEURL2 plays a crucial role in myofiber development, ensuring proper differentiation and maturation. It acts as a substrate-recognition component within a protein complex called ECS (Elongin BC-CUL2/5-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase, facilitating the ubiquitination of target proteins. This protein likely contributes to the catalytic process by recognizing and positioning both the target protein and the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme. During myogenesis, NEURL2 specifically regulates the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of beta-catenin, a protein found at the sarcolemma, the cell membrane of muscle fibers. This control of beta-catenin degradation is essential for proper muscle development.

NEURL2 is also known as C20orf163, OZZ, OZZ-E3.
