NCAN

Description

The NCAN (neurocan) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Neurocan is a protein encoded by the NCAN gene in humans. It is a member of the lectican and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan protein families and consists of neurocan core protein and chondroitin sulfate. It is thought to be involved in modulating cell adhesion and migration. While NCAN knockout mice don't show significant brain development or behavioral defects, studies have linked variations in the NCAN gene to bipolar disorder, particularly manic symptoms. A study in 2012 showed a strong association between NCAN genotype and manic symptoms, but not depressive symptoms. In mice lacking functional Neurocan, manic-like behaviors were observed, which could be normalized by administering lithium. These findings suggest a potential role for Neurocan in regulating mood and behavior.

NCAN is also known as CSPG3.
