Mycophenolate Mofetil
Description
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is a potent immunosuppressant medication primarily used to prevent organ rejection in individuals who have undergone organ transplantation. It works by inhibiting the production of purines, essential building blocks for DNA and RNA, thereby suppressing the immune system's ability to attack the transplanted organ. MMF is available in oral tablet form and is typically administered twice daily. It is generally well-tolerated, although potential side effects include gastrointestinal issues, bone marrow suppression, and an increased risk of infections.
Associated Diseases
- Organ Transplantation (Kidney, Liver, Heart, Lung)
- Autoimmune Diseases (Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis)
- Graft-versus-Host Disease
Did you know?
MMF was originally developed as an anti-cancer drug, but its immunosuppressive properties were discovered during clinical trials.
