Description
The MUC5AC (mucin 5AC, oligomeric mucus/gel-forming) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
Mucin-5AC (MUC-5AC) is a protein encoded by the MUC5AC gene in humans. It is a large gel-forming glycoprotein. In the respiratory tract, it protects against infection by binding to inhaled pathogens, which are subsequently removed by mucociliary clearance. Overproduction of MUC5AC can contribute to diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and has also been associated with greater protection against influenza infection. This gene has been linked to mucus hypersecretion in the respiratory tract and is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
MUC5AC is a gel-forming glycoprotein found in the gastric and respiratory tracts. It protects the mucosa from infection and chemical damage by binding to inhaled microorganisms and particles, which are then removed by the mucociliary system. MUC5AC also interacts with H. pylori in the gastric epithelium, Barrett's esophagus, and gastric metaplasia of the duodenum (GMD).
