MRPS26

Description

The MRPS26 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S26) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

The MRPS26 gene encodes the 28S ribosomal protein S26, mitochondrial, which is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome. Mitochondrial ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion, the cell's powerhouses. They differ from prokaryotic ribosomes in several ways, including their protein-to-rRNA composition and the lack of a 5S rRNA. The MRPS26 gene is located near the gonadotropin-releasing hormone precursor gene.

MRPS26 is also known as C20orf193, GI008, MRP-S13, MRP-S26, MRPS13, NY-BR-87, RPMS13, dJ534B8.3, mS26.
