MRPS24

Description

The MRPS24 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S24) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The MRPS24 gene encodes a protein known as 28S ribosomal protein S24, mitochondrial. This protein plays a crucial role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion, which is the cell's powerhouse. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) are responsible for making proteins within mitochondria. They are composed of two subunits: a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. The MRPS24 protein is part of the small 28S subunit. Mitochondrial ribosomes are different from ribosomes found in the rest of the cell, with a higher protein-to-RNA ratio and lacking a 5S rRNA. Although the proteins in mitoribosomes differ between species, the MRPS24 gene is also found as a pseudogene on chromosome 11.

MRPS24 is also known as HSPC335, MRP-S24, S24mt, bMRP-47, bMRP47.
