MRPS21

Description

The MRPS21 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S21) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The MRPS21 gene encodes a protein called 28S ribosomal protein S21, mitochondrial. This protein is part of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is responsible for protein synthesis within the mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes are made up of two subunits: a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. MRPS21 is a component of the small subunit. While similar to prokaryotic ribosomes, mitochondrial ribosomes have a different protein-to-rRNA ratio and lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS21 gene has been found to have pseudogenes on several chromosomes. Multiple splice variants of the gene have been identified, all of which encode the same protein.

MRPS21 is also known as MDS016, MRP-S21, RPMS21, bS21m.
