MRPS18B

Description

The MRPS18B (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

The MRPS18B gene encodes the mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18b, a component of the small subunit (28S) of mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes. These ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion, a process crucial for cellular energy production. MRPS18B is one of three proteins that share significant sequence similarity to bacterial S18 proteins, highlighting its evolutionary conservation. Although these human mitochondrial S18 proteins are related to their bacterial counterparts, their primary sequences are not more closely related to each other than they are to the prokaryotic S18 proteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to the MRPS18B gene are found on chromosomes 1q and 2q.

MRPS18B is also known as C6orf14, HSPC183, HumanS18a, MRP-S18-2, MRPS18-2, PTD017, S18amt, mS40.
