MRPS18A

Description

The MRPS18A (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

MRPS18A (28S ribosomal protein S18a, mitochondrial) is a gene that encodes a protein involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondria, known as the "powerhouses of the cell," have their own ribosomes (mitoribosomes) responsible for making mitochondrial proteins. The mitoribosome consists of two subunits, a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. MRPS18A encodes a protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S18P family, specifically a component of the 28S subunit. The protein encoded by MRPS18A is one of three that share significant sequence similarity to bacterial S18 proteins, highlighting its evolutionary conservation. While these proteins have similar primary sequences, they are not closely related to each other. A pseudogene, a non-functional copy of the gene, is found on chromosome 3p.

MRPS18A is also known as HumanS18b, MRP-S18-3, MRP-S18-a, MRPS18-3, S18bmt, S18mt-a, mL66.
