The MRPL28 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L28) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

MRPL28 is a protein that is encoded by the MRPL28 gene in humans. It is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome, specifically the 39S large subunit. Mitochondrial ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis within mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles of cells. Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes are composed of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a significant protein-to-rRNA ratio. MRPL28, as part of the 39S subunit, plays a role in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Interestingly, a portion of MRPL28 was initially identified due to its ability to recognize tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, in a specific immune context.
